Description: Annual or perennial herbs, monoecious.
Leaves alternate, toothed to ± entire; stipules lateral, free. Male and female flowers in the same or different axillary clusters. Male flowers with 2-lipped perianth and 1 stamen. Female flowers with urn-shaped perianth, ± toothed; ovary enclosed in perianth, stigma linear, often short, hairy or brush-like.
Achene enclosed by perianth, but not fused to it.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 5 species, southern Africa, New Zealand & Australia. Australia: 1 or 2 species, Qld, N.S.W., Vic., Tas.
