Genus Carpesium Family Asteraceae

Description: Erect annual, biennial or perennial herbs.

Leaves simple, alternate.

Heads simple, terminal or axillary, sessile or pedunculate; heads ± campanulate or hemispherical; involucral bracts imbricate, 3- or 4-seriate, outer ones herbaceous, inner subscarious; receptacle flat or convex, scales absent. Florets all tubular; outer female, 3–5-toothed; inner more funnelform, bisexual, 5-toothed. Anthers tailed at base, apex rounded. Style branches short, linear, flat with rounded tip.

Achenes elongate, glabrous, fine-ribbed, tapering to a short beak, surmounted by a minute crown, glands near apex; pappus absent.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 10 species, Europe to southern Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
