Description: Perennial shrubs.
Leaves opposite, often in terminal clusters.
Inflorescence usually cymose, pendent; peduncle scape-like. Flowers 5-merous. Sepals united, fleshy. Corolla tubular, with the apical lobes recurved. Stamens in 2 whorls of unequal length, filaments fused to corolla tube. Carpels slightly fused at base, each with numerous ovules.
Follicles many-seeded; seeds ridged.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 35 species southern Africa, 1 in East Africa & Arabia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
