Genus Eriobotrya Family Rosaceae

Description: Evergreen shrubs and small trees.

Leaves simple, large, toothed; stipules united with short petiole.

Flowers in terminal panicles. Sepals 5, persistent on top of fruit. Petals 5. Stamens c. 20. Ovary of 2–5 fused carpels, inferior, 2–5-locular; styles free; ovules 2 in each loculus.

Pome with 1 or 2 large seeds.


Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 10 species, eastern Asia. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).

Eriobotrya was formerly placed in the family Malaceae (now part of Rosaceae), e.g. Flora of New South Wales Vol. 1 (1990).
