Description: Perennial herbs with long creeping rhizomes, glabrous.
Leaves erect from rhizome nodes, reduced to hollow phyllodes with transverse septa.
Inflorescence a simple umbel, few-flowered; bracts few, inconspicuous. Flowers bisexual, usually white. Sepals minute. Petals circular with acute inflexed apex. Stylopodium depressed or absent; styles very short.
Fruit ovoid or globose, ± compressed laterally; carpophore absent; mericarps ribbed, those near mericarp junction thick and corky.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 13 species, North & South America, New Zealand & Australia. Australia: 3 species (endemic), all States except N.T. & W.A.
