Inflorescence a terminal or axillary raceme. Flowers bisexual, 4-merous. Perianth segments 4. Stamens 4, shorter than perianth. Carpel solitary; ovule solitary.
Fruit a berry; 1-seeded.
Distribution and occurrence: World: c. 3 species, tropical America. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).
