Genus Sclerochloa Family Poaceae

Description: Erect annuals; culm internodes solid, nodes smooth.

Leaves with ligule membranous; blade narrow.

Inflorescence spicate, 1-sided, partly enclosed in uppermost sheath; rachis smooth, flattened, hollowed, spikelets not disarticulating. Spikelets laterally compressed, pedicellate, solitary, florets 3–5, rachilla extending beyond uppermost fertile floret. Glumes shorter than lemmas, unequal, lower glume 1-nerved, upper glume 5-nerved. Lemma truncate, conspicuously 5–7-nerved, rounded or with 2 or more keels, glabrous; palea 2 or more nerved.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 sp., Asia & Eur. Aust.: 1 sp. (naturalized).

Derivation: from the Greek words for ‘hard’ and ‘grass’.
