Genus Sorbus Family Rosaceae

Description: Deciduous trees or shrubs, spines absent.

Leaves pinnate or simple and unlobed to deeply lobed.

Flowers in compound corymbs. Petals usually white, rarely pink. Stamens 12–25. Carpels 2–5, partly free or fused, walls cartilaginous or membranous in fruit; ovules 2; styles free or united at base.


Distribution and occurrence: World: 100 species, N. temperate. Australia: 1 species (naturalized).

Sorbus was formerly placed in the family Malaceae (now part of Rosaceae), e.g. Flora of New South Wales Vol. 1 (1990).
