Description: Slender, branched submerged aquatic annual or perennial; rhizome slender, spreading.
Leaves mostly opposite, sometimes in pseudowhorls, linear, 1-veined; ligule longer than sheath. Male flowers at the base of female flower, without a perianth, with 1 stamen; anther 4- or 8-sporangiate. Female flowers axillary, paired with a male flower, with cup-like perianth and 1–9 carpels; styles elongate, persistent; stigmas asymmetrically funnel-shaped.
Fruit beaked, flattened, with blunt tubercles along the back.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 1 species, cosmopolitan. Australia: 1 species (native).
