Description: Erect, slender, tufted annual to 0.7 (-0.9) m high.

Leaves with sheath somewhat inflated in the upper part; ligule truncate to obtuse, irregularly toothed, 1–5 mm long; blade flat, (1.5-) 2–8 mm wide, minutely scabrous.

Panicle cylindrical, dense, tapering at both ends, 2–12 cm long, mostly 3–6 mm wide, the branches usually bearing only 1 spikelet. Spikelets 4.5–7 mm long. Glumes narrow-oblong to ovate, acute, united to the middle, (4-) 4.5–7 mm long, shortly ciliate on the keels, margins ciliate, the nerves hairy below. Lemma ovate, acute, keeled, subequal to the glumes; awn (8-) 10–12 mm long, inserted near the base of the lemma.


Flowering: mainly spring.

Distribution and occurrence: Weed of cultivated or disturbed ground. Native of Eur. & Asia.
