Althenia bilocularis (Kirk) Cockayne APNI*

Synonyms: Lepilaena bilocularis Kirk APNI*

Description: Delicate dioecious annual or short-lived perennial submerged aquatic from < 1 cm high to > 1 m long.

Leaves mostly alternate, almost opposite when subtending flowers; minute to 4 cm long, < 1 mm wide, 1-veined, apex truncate often with 3 ± distinct mucros; auriculate on female plants, ligulate on male plants.

Male flower with a cup-shaped perianth, c. 1 mm long; stamen 1, subsessile, apiculate, c. 2 mm long, 4-sporangiate. Female flowers shortly pedicellate; perianth segments 3, c. 2 mm long; carpels 3, free; style delicate, about as long as the mature ovary; stigma broad, deeply divided, nearly as long as the style.

Fruit retained in persistent perianth, ± cylindrical, 1–1.5 mm long, smooth or slightly tuberculate, the style base persistent.
