Description: Dioecious perennial herb; rhizome shortly creeping, 4–8 mm diam.

Culms c. 50–150 cm high, c. 1–3 mm diam. Sheaths brown, appressed, c. 15–40 cm long, often glabrous, rarely with ciliate margins, apex acute; lamina absent.

Spikelets on short filiform pedicels, arranged in a very narrow panicle or a raceme. Free portion of the lowest subtending bract lanceolate to narrow-lanceolate, appressed, not tending to embrace the spikelets. Sterile glumes with some short hairs on margins, less hairs on fertile glumes. Male spikelets 5–15 per inflorescence, ovate, c. 5.5–8 mm long. Male stamens 3; pistillode minute. Female spikelets 5–10 per inflorescence, ovoid to ellipsoid, c. 6–9.5 mm long. Female tepals 4; staminodes 2.
