Description: Caespitose perennial to c. 1 m high.
Upper leaves with expanded sheath and reduced blade; ligule obtuse, 1.5–4 mm long, ciliate; blade 4–8 mm wide, glabrous.
Racemes 3–6, golden, fluffy, subdigitate, spike-like, 7–14 cm long, not always fully exserted. Sessile spikelets acute, 7–8 mm long; callus densely bearded with hairs longer than spikelet. Lower glume very narrowly truncate, densely long-hairy over most of the back and ciliate on the margins; upper glume lanceolate-acute, keeled, with hyaline margins. Lower lemma ovate, acuminate, ciliolate; awn 16–20 mm long; palea almost transparent, broad-obovate, jagged at the apex, about 2 mm long. Stamens 3. Pedicellate spikelet linear-oblong or linear, 3–4 mm long, reduced to the hairy lower glume and a rudiment of the upper glume.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland on heavy soils.
