Description: Herb with a single scape 15–60 cm high, roots thick, spreading.
Leaves mainly basal, spathulate, 2–16 cm long, 2–25 mm wide, apex acute to broad-acuminate, base ± attenuate, surfaces sparsely hairy with multiseptate hairs or glabrous; upper leaves lanceolate, 0.5–12.5 cm long, 1–16 mm wide, base stem-clasping.
Compound head globose to hemispherical, 15–30 mm diam., with c. 40–90 partial heads; partial heads with 5–10 florets, main bract herbaceous with hairs at the base and on the margins, and with scarious margins or lobes; scape yellowish to red-brown, hairy. Corollas orange.
Achenes 0.5–1.5 mm long; pappus of 14–19 plumose hairs 2–5 mm long.
Flowering: summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland at higher subalpine levels; south from Mt Gingera (A.C.T.).

Occasionally in sheltered alpine sites this species appears to hybridize with yellow-flowered species.
