Description: Tufted annual or short-lived perennial to c. 1 m high; culms and nodes with hairs to 0.3 mm, these sometimes abraded off with age.

Leaves with sheath glabrous or with scattered hairs to 0.2 mm long; ligule membranous, 1–1.5 mm long, sometimes with an auricular lobe subequal to the ligule; blade inrolled, to 2 mm wide, glabrous or sometimes with scattered hairs to 0.2 mm long.

Inflorescence ± contracted, 11–20 cm long, 2–3 cm wide. Spikelets 5–6 mm long, often with a sterile rachilla projection c. 0.2 mm long. Lower glume 4–5 mm long; upper glume 5–6 mm long. Lemma 4–5.5 mm long, 80–100% the length of upper glume, subterminally awned c. 0.5 mm below the membranous tip; awn 12–16 mm long, geniculate, twisted; callus with rigid hairs 0.5–1.2 mm long. Palea subequal to lemma. Anthers 3.


Flowering: summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Widespread in woodland on better soils.
