Description: Intricate, rounded shrub 1–3 m high and diam., regularly and usually strongly striate, with stems grey-green, often ending in a spine.
Leaves not persistent, linear to narrow-lanceolate, 1.5–7 cm long, 2–10 mm wide, usually flat, thin, apex acute to acuminate; petiole < 5 mm long.
Flower clusters in spike-like inflorescences, 2–12 cm long, sometimes compound or solitary clusters at nodes on stems. Perianth slightly thickened in fruit. Anthers 0.4–1.0 mm long.
Achene trigonous, 3.5–4 mm long, smooth, brown.
Distribution and occurrence: in seasonally flooded low-lying areas of grey clay soils.
