Description: Tufted or rarely stoloniferous perennial to 0.7 m high.

Leaves with ligule short, truncate, finely toothed, ciliate; blade 2–6 mm wide, scaberulous, glabrous or hairy.

Panicle narrow, nodding, subsecund, 7–25 cm long, branches very unequal, flexuous. Spikelets oblong, 5–8 mm long. Glumes subequal, 7-nerved, 5–8 mm long. Sterile florets subequal, 5-nerved, the lower subequal to the lower glume, shortly bearded at the base, awnless; upper subequal to the upper glume, with a mucro to 1.5 mm long, with 2 appendages at the base. Fertile lemma slightly shorter than upper sterile lemma, 5–7-nerved, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs.

Flowering: spring–summer.

Distribution and occurrence: Moderately useful pasture species on light soils of low fertility and rainfall between 330 and 760 mm. Native of S Afr.
