Description: Herb 15–60 cm high, glabrous or minutely pubescent, tinged with red at maturity.
Leaves hastate to cordate, 3–7 cm long, usually only slightly longer than wide, lower leaves petiolate and upper sessile.
Flowers long-pedicellate, not articulate, in short, compact inflorescences. Perianth segments 2–3.5 mm long, greenish white tinged with pink.
Achene 5–6 mm long, dark brown, with smooth faces, dullish.
Distribution and occurrence: Occasionally naturalized. Probably native of W & C Asia; now widely cultivated for grain.
