Hebenstretia dentata L. APNI*

Description: Perennial shrub, 30–60 cm high; branches finely pubescent in decurrent lines from the leaf bases or ± glabrous.

Leaves linear to ± lanceolate, 0.5–3.5 mm long 0.5–1 mm wide, margins ± toothed in the upper half, glabrous; basal leaves sometimes larger.

Spikes elongate, to 15 cm long; bracts 3.5–4.5 mm long. Calyx 3–4 mm long, 2-veined. Corolla 7–9 mm long, yellow or white and usually with a darker or orange blotch in centre.

Fruit ± oblong, 3–4 mm long.


Flowering: throughout year.

Distribution and occurrence: Cultivated as an ornamental, occasionally naturalized in the Newcastle to Nelson Bay district. Native of S Afr.
