Description: Slender, tufted perennial with short rhizome.

Culms terete to compressed, nodeless, striate, scabrous, 30–140 cm high, 1–2 mm diam. Leaves basal; blade compressed to flat, shorter than to greatly exceeding culms, 2–3 mm diam.; sheath evenly reddish or with straw-coloured tinges, dull.

Inflorescence interrupted-oblong in outline, narrow, with slender, distant, somewhat drooping branches, 10–55 cm long, 1–2 cm diam.; lowest involucral bract shorter than inflorescence. Spikelets numerous, 1-flowered, 6–11 mm long. Glumes 3, long-acute, straw-coloured streaked with red-brown, with margins glabrous, midrib occasionally scaberulous; fertile glumes 6–10 mm long. Anthers 2.5–4 mm long, excluding appendage c. 0.5 mm long.

Nut ovoid to ellipsoid, 2.7–3.5 mm long, 1.0–1.6 mm diam., smooth or partly wrinkled, white-hispid at apex, ± shining, red-brown to blackish.

Distribution and occurrence: From Blue Mtns south to Carrington Falls.

Grows in permanently damp, sheltered positions below sandstone cliffs or along creeks.
