Description: Stem subterranean, 8–15 cm diam.

Leaves 1–5 in crown, 50–90 cm long, rachis strongly spirally twisted; pinnae 80–120, simple, margins incurved, apex not spinescent, dark green, semi-glossy, longest pinnae 14–21 cm long, 4–6 mm wide; basal pinnae not reduced to spines; petiole ± terete, 9–24 cm long.

Male cones 14–22 cm long, 4–4.5 cm diam., spines 0–1.3 cm long. Female cones ovoid, 13–15 cm long, 7–8 cm diam.; spines 0.2–3 cm long; seeds ovoid 2.1–2.6 cm long, 1.8–2.4 cm wide, red.

Distribution and occurrence: A widespread, but sporadic species, usually on sloping country in dry sclerophyll woodland through the upper Hunter Valley, north to the hills and ranges around Liverpool Plains.
