Description: Perennials with creeping rhizomes. Culms often curved and ascending at the base then erect above, to c. 1 m tall, usually simple, slender to rather stout, strongly compressed, 3–many-noded, striate, scabrous.
Leaves with sheath open above, strongly compressed and keeled, scabrous, striate, thin; ligule thin and membranous, 1–5 mm long, obtuse or almost truncate; blade flat, thin, erect or erectly spreading, 1.5–4 mm wide, prominently nerved.
Inflorescence 6–45 cm long, narrowly to broadly oblong to pyramidal-acute at maturity, branches spreading to somewhat reflexed. Spikelets linear to linear-lanceolate, 3–12-flowered, 5–11 mm long. Glumes acute to obtuse, 3(-5)-nerved. Lemmas 3.5–5 mm long, usually hairy on the lower back, keeled, 5-nerved, web obsolete; palea finely scabrous on the keels above.
Flowering: Flowers in response to rain and flooding.
Distribution and occurrence: In more or less wet situations such as swamps, river flats and drainage channels in inland districts.
