Potamogeton perfoliatus L. APNI*

Description: Submerged rhizomatous aquatic perennial producing turions; stems trailing, terete, branched, to 3 m long.

Leaves ovate, to 6 cm long and 40 mm wide, translucent, base stem-clasping, margins undulate, entire; free from the stipular sheath; stipular sheath membranous, falling early, to 1 cm long, surrounding the stem above the node, visible on young stems.

Inflorescence a dense spike, emergent, to 2 cm long when in fruit.

Nutlets 2–3 mm long, convex on ventral side and semi-circular on the dorsal, laterally compressed, ± smooth with a very short beak.


Flowering: during warmer months.

Distribution and occurrence: Eastern half of NSW; also southeast Qld, Vic and Tas

In permanent waterbodies; often grows in fast-flowing water in only a few cm of substrate; reasonably salt-tolerant.
