Description: Stoloniferous aquatic perennials to c. 80 cm tall.
Nodes glabrous. Sheaths becoming loose from the stem; ligule hyaline, erosely truncate, c. 1–1.5 mm long; blade flat, spreading, c. 2.75 mm wide.
Inflorescence 3–8 cm long, each branch bearing a single spikelet, occasionally a second spikelet present on the lower branches, spikelet appressed into the lowest curve. Spikelets 7.5–10 mm long, 1.5 mm wide, lanceolate, long-acuminate. Lower glume truncate or rounded-obtuse, c. 1.5 mm long; upper glume the shape and size of the spikelet, tapering to a long acute point, 13–15-nerved. Lower lemma staminate, similar to the upper glume but a little shorter, c. 13-nerved; palea hyaline a little shorter than the lemma. Fertile lemma elliptical, shortly acute, 3.25–3.5 mm long, 1 mm wide, dorsally compressed, smooth faintly 5-nerved, shortly stipitate above the lower on a stipe about 0.4 mm long; palea similar in texture to the lemma and almost as long.
Flowering: Flowers in summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Endemic to Australia. Grows in and around ephemeral or permanent pools and watercourses, often forming floating mats and/or a close turf on drying mud.
