Description: Perennial, densely pilose with ± appressed hairs.
Flowering stems mostly 5–15 cm high (rarely to 40 cm).
Leaves with lamina ovate to elliptic, 0.8–4.5 cm long, coarsely 3–7-toothed or 3-lobed, or ternate with toothed segments; petiole 1–12 cm long. Flowers 13–28 mm diam. Petals 5, obovate with cuneate base; the nectary with an oblong or cuneate lobe.
Achenes smooth, 2.5–5 mm long and 2–3.5 mm thick, in a globose or ellipsoid head; beak 1.5–2 mm long, recurved or straight with a recurved tip.
Flowering: mostly August–September
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in grassland and woodland.
