Salix x calodendron Wimm. APNI*

Description: Tall erect multi-stemmed shrub or small tree to 10 (–12) m high with a narrow truncate crown; bark striated; twigs persistently tomentose becoming glabrescent in the second year, marked with striate lines; buds densely pubescent, brown.

Leaves petiolate; lamina usually oblong-elliptic, up to 10 (–15) cm long and to 30 (–50) mm wide, dull green and sparsely pubescent above, ashy-grey below with denser hairs; margin narrowly recurved, obscurely glandular-toothed (margin may appear entire); stipules conspicuous 8–15 mm long, 5–7 mm wide, often falcate with recurved glandular, finely toothed margin.

Female plants only known, catkins appearing before leaves, cylidrical, erect to spreading, up to 7 cm long, peduncle and rachis densely villous/ long-sericeous; scales dark black-brown; ovary white tomentose.

No seed produced.

Distribution and occurrence: has been planted for stream stabilisation and on roadsides; may be naturalised in N.S.W. and Victoria; naturalised in New Zealand.

A hybrid taxon from Europe, probably involving Salix caprea, S. cinerea (?subsp. oleifolia) and S. viminalis. Cultivars 'Hybrida' and 'Balana' have been collected.
