Description: Perennial herb with a stout rootstock; aerial stems annual, to 1 m high.
Leaves 8–20 cm long; leaflets 9–21, ovate, 15–25 mm long, toothed, glabrous, petiole 2–4 cm long; stipules leafy, c. 15 mm long, stem-clasping, toothed.
Spikes globose to ovoid, 10–15 mm long on peduncle 10–15 cm long. Flowers unisexual, the female above the male. Male flowers with 4 stamens, sometimes with 1 or 2 stigmas. Female flowers with 2 carpels and sometimes 1 or 2 stamens.
Fruiting hypanthium 3–4 mm long, 4-ribbed, strongly pitted between the ribs.
Distribution and occurrence: Native of Eur.
