Description: Annual or short-lived perennial shrub to 1 m high, sparsely hairy with long simple and minute glandular hairs; prickles yellowish, scattered on most parts.
Leaves broad-ovate, to 15 cm long and wide, but often smaller and lobed; ± concolorous, both surfaces green and sparsely hairy; petiole to 8 cm long.
Inflorescences 1–3-flowered; peduncle 20–40 mm long; pedicels 10–25 mm long. Calyx 4–6 mm long; lobes 2–3 mm long. Corolla stellate, deeply incised, 20–30 mm diam., white.
Berry 20–35 mm diam., bright orange-scarlet.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized in disturbed, high-rainfall districts; chiefly in near-coastal areas north from Bulahdelah, also collected from Tamworth. Native of C Amer.
