Stuckenia pectinata (L.) Borner APNI* Synonyms: Potamogeton pectinatus L. APNI*
Description: Submerged rhizomatous aquatic perennial with a vigorous rhizome system that penetrates mud to c. 1 m and produces numerous fleshy root tubers; stems to c. 3 m long, usually much branched; turions not recorded.
Leaves narrow-linear, to 17 cm long and 2 mm wide, apex mucronate to acute, margins entire; joined to a loose stipular sheath that ± surrounds the stem, upper portion of the sheath forming a distinctive, stem-clasping ligule 3–15 mm long.
Inflorescence an erect or lax spike, emergent, ± floating or remaining submerged, to 5 cm long, interrupted with the flowers in small globose groups of 2–6.
Nutlets 3–4.5 mm long, ± globose and laterally compressed, smooth, and with a very short beak.
Flowering: spring–autumn.
Distribution and occurrence: Usually grows in slightly saline to saline stationary water to c. 4 m deep.
