Description: Low hemispherical shrub, usually < 1 m high.

Branches succulent, ± cylindrical, leaf lobes entire.

Inflorescence 2–50 mm long. Flowers fused to one another and, at least in the lower half, to the upper bract; bisexual or with either the stamen or the ovary sterile.

Seed smooth and glossy all over.


Distribution and occurrence: Widespread in both coastal and inland saline areas.
