Description: Ascending annual to 0.4 m high.

Leaves with ligule a row of short cilia; blade 5–8 mm wide, sparsely sprinkled with tubercle-based hairs.

Inflorescence of 2–3 racemes 1.5–2.5 cm long; spikelets alternate on each side of the midrib; pedicels c. 0.4 mm long. Spikelets 4–4.8 mm long, glabrous. Lower glume 12–20(–50)% as long as the spikelet, asymmetric, 1–5-nerved, only the midrib reaching the apex; upper glume the shape and size of the spikelet, 7–9-nerved, the nerves equally spaced. Lower lemma of similar texture to the upper glume, 5–7-nerved, with the lateral nerves on each side somewhat remote from the midnerve, and the margins incurved and thinner; palea well developed, flat. Fertile lemma c. 2.3 mm long, with a distinct shortly hirsute mucro 0.3–0.7 mm long, papillose-rugose.
