Zannichellia palustris L. APNI*
Description: Submerged monoecious weakly rhizomatous aquatic annual or perennial.
Leaves mostly opposite; ligule longer than the sheath, 2–7 cm long, < 1 mm wide, margins entire, the midvein dividing before the apex, apex acute with a minute mucro.
Male flower without a perianth and with a single 4-sporangiate anther. Female flower with perianth cup-like and c. 1 mm long; carpels mainly 3, each with a short style c. 1 mm long and an asymmetric funnel-shaped stigma c. 0.2 mm across.
Fruit dorsally curved and mostly with tubercles on dorsal surface, 2–4 mm long.
Flowering: during warmer months.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows in fresh or slightly saline stationary or slowly flowing water.
