Description: Small, tufted perennial with short rhizome, occasionally with small tubers.
Culms 4-angled, to 20 cm high, to 0.5 mm diam.
Spikelet ellipsoid or ovoid, occasionally proliferating, 4–7 mm long. Glumes obtuse, 2.5–3 mm long, dark red-brown to blackish. Bristles 4, filiform, pale brown, very unequal, the longest scarcely reaching the top of nut. Stamens 3; anthers 1.4–1.7 mm long. Style 3-fid.
Nut trigonous, with the angles rounded and not ribbed, broad-obovoid, c. 1.1 mm long, c. 0.9 mm diam., pale yellow-brown; external cells minute, shortly vertically oblong; style base about two-thirds as long as nut, slightly decurrent over shoulders of nut.
Flowering: spring–summer.
Distribution and occurrence: Naturalized in moist situations in Centennial Park, Sydney, and near Medowie (NC). Native of Chile.
