Description: Erect shrub to 2 m high, hairy with stellate and minute glandular hairs; prickles abundant on branches, petioles and lower peduncles.
Leaves variable; lower leaves ± pinnatisect, ovate in outline, 10–20 cm long, 6–15 cm wide, deeply lobed, petiole to 8 cm long; upper leaves, elliptic to lanceolate, mostly 6–9 cm long, 2–5 cm wide, margins entire to shallowly lobed, upper surface green and sparsely hairy, lower surface yellowish to grey-tomentose; petiole to 3 cm long.
Inflorescences 5–30-flowered; peduncle 15–60 mm long; rachis often branched, to 50 mm long; pedicels 3–10 mm long. Calyx 4–7 mm long; lobes 2–3 mm long. Corolla stellate, deeply incised, 10–20 mm diam., bluish purple.
Berry 8–12 mm diam., dark red to black.
Flowering: chiefly autumn–spring.
Distribution and occurrence: Grows on rainforest margins, and creek banks; chiefly in coastal districts north from Clarence R., also north from Warialda area.
