Description: Rhizomatous perennial herbs.
Leaves cordate, the basal leaf lobes sometimes elongated and upturned; leaves alternate.
Flowers solitary [or in few-flowered cymes], actinomorphic, bisexual. Tepals 5 or more, petaloid, white or yellow. Stamens 15–25. Carpels nectar-secreting with 2 rows of ovules.
Fruit a group of follicles.
Distribution and occurrence: World: 20–30 species, cold & temperate regions of Northern & Southern Hemispheres. Australia: 2 species (endemic), N.S.W., Vic., Tas.
