Curculigo ensifolia var. ensifolia R.Br. APNI*

Description: Perennial herb 10–30 cm high; corm elongate, 4–9 mm diam., 2.5–16 cm long.

Leaves 5–50 cm long; lamina 5–25 mm wide, tapering to both ends, sparsely to moderately hairy, especially so basally; pseudopetiole, if present, up to 15 cm long.

Inflorescences 1–6; peduncle 15–35 mm long, flattened, very hairy with long, simple hairs; bracts to 4.5 cm long, papery, the lowest bract sheathing the peduncle. Perianth yellow; tube 12–30 mm long above ovary; lobes c. 6 mm long and 1.5 mm wide, shortly hairy outside. Stamens 3–5 mm long; anthers up to 4 mm long, versatile. Ovary 2–3 mm long; free section of stigma and style c. 4 mm long.

Fruit narrow-oblong, 6.5–12 mm long, 2–4 mm diam.; seeds longitudinally striate, shiny, black.


Flowering: summer–autumn.

Distribution and occurrence: Usually grows in sandy soils in damp situations; north from Newcastle.
