Description: Glabrous perennial to 0.8 m high.

Leaves with sheath loose, smooth to scaberulous; ligule oblong, obtuse, 1–1.5 mm long; blade becoming recurved, to 2.5 mm wide, apex sharply attenuate.

Inflorescence linear to ovate, compact, 3–15 cm long. Spikelets ovate to broad-ovate, erect on short pedicels, 4–12-flowered. Glumes broad-obovate, shortly acute or obtuse, green or purplish. Lemmas closely imbricate, broad-obovate, mucronate, 2 mm long, glabrous. Palea elliptic, 1 mm long, finely winged, the wings glabrous.

Flowering: spring.

Distribution and occurrence: Grows in long-established low-fertile soils but not disturbed pastures. Native of S Amer.
